Twelve people, including two police officers, were killed Saturday in a gun battle between two rival drug gangs in a slum in northern Rio de Janeiro, a state spokesman said.

Marcos Benjamin didn't describe the identities of the other victims.

He said the officers died when their helicopter was shot down over the neighborhood known as Morro dos Macacos. Eight buses were set on fire during the clashes, he said.

The violence comes two weeks after Rio, Brazil's second largest city, celebrated winning the 2016 Olympic Games.
